No complaints July 6, 2008 Paul S. Ell (NI, UK) 35 out of 35 found this review helpful
This is a clever multifunctional device. It can be used to extend your existing 'n' network, it can be connected via a USB port to allow wireless printing from all your computers around the house, and it can stream music from i-tunes when connected to powered speakers.
Unlike other reviewers, I had no problems setting this up, or updating the hardware. In my installation it's wirelessly linked to an Apple Time Capsule which is used the the 'n' base station - linked by cable to a router. The AP Express is by my printer and provides access to network printing. It's also linked to a stereo system and will play i-tunes tracks from any computer on my normal stereo.
If you travel this an excellent piece of kit. If your hotel has broadband but no wireless network you can easily take the AP Express with you and set up a network. I do this a lot and because the AP Express is so small it's not a problem taking it.
The downside - well like at Apple wireless solutions there's no modem built in so you need two boxes rather than one. With the Express I can forgive this - it is just so small. I'm feel more strongly that Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme should feature in built modems.
At £65 this device is good value and getting it to work - in the fairly complex way I've set it up - was easy.
Real time audio playback March 18, 2009 Mr. C. Bude (St Albans) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
What I am impressed with is that the audio playback does not have any kind of delay over the network. You can verify this as is possible to play itunes through multiple speakers, so if you have the computer speakers and airport express both sending out sound, the output is perfectly in sync. I'm surprised since most digital equipment tends to have some inherent delay, so well done Apple!
If you've bought yours second hand like I did, make sure you update the firmware (7.4.1 at time of writing) as I did have a few problems when it was on 7.3.2. Also you may want to use the Manual setup option to set the IP address as it tried to grab the same IP my PC was using, so caused a conflict on the network.
One other thing, if you plan having this in the kitchen next to the microwave, when the microwave is on it will interrupt the signal enough to lose connectivity. So if you can place it a good distance away.
No setup probs with vista September 12, 2008 N. Armstrong (UK) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Just got one and had no probs setting it up with vista. Hardwired it with ethernet cable first to do the set up then unplugged the cable. Just using it for airtunes and it sounds great. Very impressed, might well get another to add sound to another room too. Have tried it in my attic room and it found the network and started streaming within 60 seconds!!!
Superb for home audio setup January 6, 2010 Mr. Neil E. Wallace (UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Apple always pays careful attention to the design of product packaging. The box itself comes packaged in another plain box to protect it. The Airport Express box has a sleeve and when taken out, folds open like a book to reveal the contents. There are even plastic tabs to help extract the contents with minimum hassle.
Inside the box you get the minimum to get going - the Airport Express itself, installation CD and a number of manuals in various languages. You'll need to have your own leads to use it but as the Airport Express can be used in many different ways, supplying leads with it would only unneccesarily add to the cost of it.
The Airport Express itself is a very simple unit. It's shaped like a large charger, with a relatively slim but deep body that should make it easy to find a space for it beside your other plugs. There are no buttons, other than a reset button hidden away which should very rarely need to be used. A single light on the front of the unit displays it's status through different combinations of colours.
There are 3 sockets present on the underside of the unit - an Ethernet socket, a USB socket and a 3.5mm audio socket. The Ethernet socket works up to Gigabit speeds, the USB socket is a 2.0 one capable of handling the higher speeds and the 3.5mm audio socket can be used with either conventional or optical leads. These sockets enable it to be used in a number of different ways.
Setup was relatively simple. The manual is clear and all that needs to be done is to install the Airport Utility, plug the Airport Express in and wait for it to finish initialising. Then scan for the Airport Express in Airport Utility, use the guide to fill in some essential information and you're away. I had to reset my wireless network to get it to recognise the Airport Express, although whether you have to do this or not will depend on your own network.
I am only using the Airport Express for the Airtunes feature at the moment. This allows you to play music from your iTunes collection on your computer wirelessly through remote speakers or a hi-fi. The real benefit of this feature is realised through the ability to control iTunes remotely via your iPhone or iPod Touch. This means that you can browse and listen to your entire collection easily. The only downside is that your computer must be on and running iTunes to do this. I'd like to see Remote for the iPhone/iPod Touch have the option to open the iTunes application on the host computer automatically when it is started to help make the process simpler.
Regardless, having the Airport Express really makes playing my music through my best speakers easy and I love being able to browse through my collection iPod-style complete with album artwork. The system operates with very little lag, even over a G network.
If you're enthusiastic about your music and have the money to spare, I'd certainly recommend this. If you can use it's other features such as adding wireless capability to an existing modem or wireless printing then it makes it an even more viable proposition.
Surprisingly Simple! November 12, 2008 silverback (yorkshire) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
After reading other reviews concerning problems setting up, I'd been put off buying this for a while, but when I found one going cheap in PC World I couldn't resist. Following the simple instructions I was set up and listening to music in 5 minutes, I'm amazed how good it sounds too especially when ripped in apple lossless. There's also a video tutorial on Apple's website if you really do get stuck.
