Sammy goes everywhere with me.... November 13, 2009 Pat O'Leary (Crosshaven, Cork Ireland) 103 out of 103 found this review helpful
Bought this because I had a chance to play with the almost identical N140 and liked it. Amazon price was best around (and still is a month later).
Big feature is battery life: I use it at College (back doing a grey-haired/no-haired M.Eng) and in my campervan and I get over well 4 hours of use on battery - as it can be turned off or into standby very easily (a double key press or close the lid) and more importantly comes back on very quickly compared to my old laptop, it works just great for quick notes, random checking the 'net, music, skype etc. Over a 10 hour day I find I rarely have to connect it to the mains.
Absolutely silent - there's some sort of a air mover that comes on now and then but you feel the heated air, not hear it. Unlike most laptops you will not burn your lap or any other tender bits.
Screen is bright and crisp. As I now wear glasses to read books I also have to wear them to read text on the N130 screen. Small screen might be a problem for you if you are over 40 and haven't got to reading glasses yet. Haven't played about with changing text and icon size on screen which is possible I believe.
I watch .avi movies or TV shows now and then (usually with headphones) - perfect.
Comes with Microsoft Office Home/Student edition paid up for 1 year. This is fully featured - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and some bits.
Negatives: single speaker - OK for youtube or downloaded lectures, might be irritating for movies or TV.
Trackpad is very small and the left/right click bit is tiny and not easy to use. OK for occasional use but for serious work you will need a mouse.
Differences from the N140 are slightly different screen, no stereo speakers, no bluetooth, and smaller capacity battery. So far I am happy to have saved the difference in price.
Highly recommended.
Love it - Excellent for the money October 3, 2009 LSG (Leicestershire) 165 out of 167 found this review helpful
Think this is a great piece of kit, especially for the price. It's very lightweight and has good battery life, some 6hrs or more. The screen is excellent having watched a couple of movies on it quite happily. The supplied software is preloaded so works almost straight out of the box. The Samsung utilities are pretty good and easy to use. I am using it mainly for working on the go so the portability issue is important to me. Like the idea of the anti bacterial keyboard. Haven't tried the webcam yet.
Drawbacks (if any) the screensize for some web pages and only one speaker, so a pair of reasonable headphones is a must.
I would recommend the following to use with this:
A decent pair of headphones or portable speakers, 2g memory upgrade,a small portable mouse,a portable DVD drive, and a small padded backpack or bag to keep it all in.
All in all very pleased with this and more than happy with Amazon for their pricing and quick delivery of it. If you want a low cost but decent spec'd netbook then this is it.
Excellent netbook November 17, 2009 Djslater (UK) 42 out of 42 found this review helpful
This notebook scores high in many online reviews and having bought it I can agree and see why so many other people rate it so highly. It really is small, easy to carry around and use. The battery life is very good at about 5 hours and it has an excellent near full size keyboard. It loads fast and as I will not load it up with too many programmes, mainly using it for word processing and internet, it will continue have a fast response in windows and boot up. The only thing people should be aware of is that the speakers are tiny for volume but, when needed, I just use light headphones. The latest netbooks may have the usual latest features and specs but this netbook will be around for a long time and is also excellent with Windows7 loaded on it.
Superb Bit of Kit! December 16, 2009 SouthernDave (ENGLAND) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
I 'ummed and erred' for ages before comitting to buy this item. Our 'big' PC has been on the way out for months and we wanted a replacement. We really only use the thing for on-line surfing, music and our digital camera. After some research we decided that a netbook would just about cover our needs and as we are on a strict budget, a proper laptop was out of the question. In the end we plumped for this netbook based on reviews on here and elsewhere.
So far thsi little machine has loaded up very quickly, we have transfered all our music and photos quickly and easily. I managed to set up a wireless home network with our other PC in minutes. The unit is light and super compact and means we will no longer have to have a huge corner of our fornt room devoted to the computer needs of our family, wich is a real boon.
IN short this little book does everything we want it to do, is neat and sturdy and I cannot so far find fault. If anything there is a bit of 'bloatware' (unnessecary programs) installed, but these took minutes to remove easily.
If you are after plain simple and highly mobile computing for basic needs, this has to be the most cost effective way of doing it. Highly reccomended.
Great netbook January 9, 2010 The Lizard King 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Great netbook, would buy again with no doubt. Just some notes on it: I put in a 2GB RAM module, which was very easy and made a good difference. I also installed Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Full Version (PC DVD), but reloaded XP as 7 ran quite slowly, seemed to use more battery than XP, and the graphics drivers seemed to crash quite a lot as Intel only have Vista drivers as far as I'm aware. Reloading XP took all of 4 minutes (I'm not joking, very easy recovery). I installed my own full copy of MS Office 2007 by copying it onto a USB key on my desktop and installing it from that.
One thing I would recommend is using less resource hungry programmes. I use VLC Media Player for music and movies - found iTunes very sluggish for watching movies. Also, Google Chrome runs very well as a replacement for Internet Explorer. I usually use Firefox, but Chrome runs much more quickly. Samsung Utility software is above average I'd say for the standard manufacturer supplied applications. Battery life (with XP) is around 4+ hours normal usage. I've also managed to use the msconfig utility to stop things in startup etc, although CCleaner does this a little more user-friendly! Office runs well though.
It doesn't have the processor to do video editing or play Doom 3 etc, but for its intended purpose - a travel netbook which frees me from having to drag a laptop to conferences - it is excellent. Charger is nice and small too. The screen is very, very good also and is very clear. No dead pixels I'm happy to say. Keyboard is great, touchpad is nice, although the buttons take a little getting used to in terms of position and size.
One thing to note is that the hard drive is not easy to get at. Upgrading or replacing requires you to unscrew the back cover and prise it from the casing. Upgrading the RAM though is simple and takes all of one minute.
If you need better specs (n130 only outputs mono through the speaker, though stereo through the headphones) and processor, you should check out the Samsung N140 10.1 inch Netbook (Atom N270 1.6GHz Processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, BT, XP Home, 9 Hour Battery, Black). For the price I paid though (£[]), it's a bargain and I would buy again in a minute if it was stolen.
BTW, the Belkin Neoprene Sleeve for Netbooks up to 10.2-Inch Jet/Cabernet fits with about 1cm room to spare at the top. Very nice case too, but there seems to be some confusion regarding it's size.
